Bob Garrett, Vocal Coach and Teacher

TATUM, SHEPHERD, DAVIS, “SING!” AND “BLOOD”

It’s been such an exciting time here in Los Angeles this week.

I’ve gone back to work with Chan Tatum on a new film project and as always, he’s one of the great guys in this business… to work with, laugh with and share memorable times.  Next, I produced a song,  the Stones’ “Moonlight Mile” for Cybill Shepherd for her new film, “ROSE”. This was Cybill at her best and the performance will bring tears to your eyes.

Please make sure not to miss Robert Allan Ackerman’s  “BLOOD” at the Complex Theatre. It is a remarkable play having garnered unanimous rave reviews and I was honored to design the harmonies and coach the cast on their vocals.  It runs through the first of the year.

I loved spending time with Judy Davis these past few weeks. She’s here filming “FEUD” with my pal Jessica Lange, Working with Judy on “ME AND MY SHADOWS: LIFE WITH JUDY GARLAND” was one of my favorite experiences ever.  She’s an extraordinary actress and person… one of the true greats.

Lastly, I’m thrilled to be going to NYC for the Thanksgiving holiday  and while there I will have meetings on our new musical, “SING”.  A workshop will soon follow here in Los Angeles, with composers including my partner Franne Golde, Brenda Russell, Stephen Bray, Ari Hest, Ferras, Richard Kerr et al.  Til next time, have a great holiday all.

I’m excited to announce my newest VOICE GYM with Online Videos… a five week program of working on one song a week presentationally, technically and emotionally.

It will be held Monday Nights October 24- December 5th.. (with Monday November 29th off.) from 7- 10 P.M.  A list of songs chosen just for you will be sent in advance so you are prepared with the melody.  At the end of the five weeks, we will choose the best two of five songs which will be videotaped. In this digital age, it is vital that you have performances to submit to casting directors, agents, managers et al.  Please email me at bobgarrett5@gmail.com to register.  Credit cards accepted. Looking forward.

I’m excited to announce my newest POP SHOP with Showcase…     a five week program of working on one song a week presentationally, technically and emotionally.  The POP SHOP will be held on        Thursday nights,  7- 10 PM October 27th- December 8th      (with Thanksgiving off) A list of songs chosen just for you will be sent in advance so you are prepared with the melody. At the end of the five weeks, you will perform the best two of five songs live for casting directors, agents, managers et al. In this day and age, having POP songs prepped fro Broadway, Film and Television is a vital  asset to you, as casting directors are not specific about what kinds of songs they would like you to perform for them. Please email me at bobgarrett5@gmail.com to register. Credit cards accepted. Looking forward.

I’m very excited to announce that Broadway Veteran CANDY BROWN (PIPPIN, CHICAGO, HELLO, DOLLY, LIZA WITH A Z) and I will co-host our first Musical Theatre Workshop in Denver November 12th and 13th.  It promises to be a spectacular weekend focusing on putting a new book of audition songs together, song and dance audition and call back tools,  the rehearsal process and showcase.  Please email me for flyer and details @ Bobgarrett.net.

I’m also thrilled too announce that my partner Franne Golde and I have completed the book and score to “SING!” and are now planning to do an LA WORKSHOP before the end of the year. Stay tuned for details.

Also, thrilled to be coming full circle with THE COLOR PURPLE. Having coached the composers on the show for 4 years, we are all so proud of the success of the Tony Award winning revival. I’m off this weekend to New York to see Heather Headley’s last performance as Shug Avery and Jennifer Holliday’s first two days  later in the same role.  These great talents will no doubt give classic  theatre performances.

I am so excited to be teaching and judging the singing competition  at the 53rd National Conference of the National Association of Teachers of Singing in Chicago, July 8-10th.  I am looking forward to connecting with over 1,000 of my colleagues. There is still time to join me if you have not made you plans yet. http://www.nats.org/Chicago_2016_-_Program.html

I’ll also be meeting the legendary Renee Fleming who is teaching a master class that weekend.

The other added bonus is seeing the pre broadway premiere of SPONGEBOB the MUSIC AL and Patti Lupone in WARPAINT. It promises to be an unforgettable weekend. !

It’s incredibly  thrilling to know those I’ve coached, who have become my friends as well, are all winning major awards:

Brie Larson – winning an Oscar for ROOM, Jessica Lange winning a Tony for LONG DAYS JOURNEY INTO NIGHT,  Ali Porter winning the VOICE and the composer/lyricists I coached, Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray,  on How To Write A Broadway Musical on THE COLOR PURPLE, won a TONY for Best Revival of  A Musical.

It’s so personally rewarding to watch  people you love and believe in being so  beautifully recognized by their peers and fans.

Bravo to you all!
